First time in Madeira? Start here

Plan your first Madeira trip in five steps: transport, trail selection, bookings, your itinerary and a final check of conditions.

  1. Start with your base and transport

Before choosing accommodation, check access to your hikes. Without a car, verify bus stops or transfer pickup points. With a car, plan parking and your return from the end of the trail.

  2. Choose trails that suit you

Do not start with a checklist of famous places. Compare duration, elevation gain, tunnels and exposure. A short trail is not necessarily easy, and a popular one may not suit your abilities.

  3. Check permits and bookings

Confirm the booking requirement and fee for your chosen trail. Match your entry time to your transport. Booking a transfer does not automatically include a trail permit.

  4. Build a flexible itinerary

Choose one main destination each day and allow time for travel, rest and weather changes. Pick extra stops near the hike. Use a ready-made itinerary as a starting point, not a compulsory programme.

  5. Check conditions before setting out

Check the current trail status, forecast and notices. A webcam shows only part of the area at one moment. Save an offline map, pack your equipment and confirm the return journey.
