Madeira attractions: what to do when you are not hiking
A rest day, cloud in the mountains or a trail closed by IFCN: three situations this page is for. We gathered the attraction categories that genuinely complement hiking, with a note on when each makes sense and what can derail it.
The rule is simple: wind stops the boats, a downpour stops the canyons, while jeeps, cable cars, gardens and museums almost always work. The five-region forecast lives on our homepage.
On the water
Dolphins and whales
Cruises from Funchal and Calheta run year round; dolphins almost always show up, whale species rotate with the season. Morning departures usually get calmer seas, and in strong wind operators cancel and refund.
Catamarans along the south coast, under the Cabo Girão cliff, some with an ocean swim stop. A good pick for a day off your feet; evening departures catch the sunset.
Rope descents beside waterfalls and jumps into plunge pools, with variants for complete beginners; gear included. After heavy rain operators cancel because water levels spike.
Open 4x4s reach tracks a rental car cannot take, with a driver who knows the terrain. They also work in moody weather, when driving the mountains yourself feels stressful.
Forest tracks and mud in the east of the island, in a guided group. Dress to get wet and dirty, because that is part of the fun; a driving licence is usually required for the driver.
The Funchal to Monte cable car is a first-day classic, and the small cable car at Achadas da Cruz in the north-west, reputedly among Europe's steepest, drops to ocean-side fields cut off from the world.
The Monte gardens and the botanical garden above Funchal take drizzle better than any trail, and the bay views remain. A natural plan for a day when the mountains drown in rain.
Funchal's museums and indoor attractions are the backup plan for a real downpour, when IFCN closes the trails and the boats stay in port. Booking online saves you queuing in season.
Availability, prices and times of cruises and tours sit with the operators and change from one day to the next. Links lead to the partner's catalogs; you book directly with them and we never see your data.
