Longer bike rides to plan

These are practical route sketches for visitors: e-bike, road riding and stronger climbs. They are not official routes or GPX files. Before you start, check the exact variant in maps, weather, traffic and return logistics.

Funchal - Câmara de Lobos

The easiest start from a Funchal base

approx. 16 km

Ride sketch

Funchal -> Lido -> Doca do Cavacas -> Câmara de Lobos -> return to Funchal

Logistics

easiest base: Funchal

Start from Funchal/Lido if you are staying in Funchal. This no-transfer option works well for a first relaxed ride.

Return: Return along the same corridor to Funchal; no transfer needed, but check the safe variant in maps.

Public transport

If you are not staying in Funchal, check SIGA to Funchal/Lido and plan the start on a safe coastal section.

Logistics

loop from Funchal with no transfer

Most convenient for people staying in Funchal. On an e-bike, check battery range because climbs drain it quickly.

Return: Start and finish in Funchal; plan a shortcut if weather or road traffic gets worse.

Without a car, it is easiest to start in Funchal; alternatively check SIGA to Câmara de Lobos and return by a shorter option.

Logistics

best from a Machico/Caniçal base

A good option if you stay in the east or have a car to Machico. From Funchal, add access time and parking.

Return: Loop/short option back to Machico; in strong wind, shorten the São Lourenço section.

These ideas are a practical visitor add-on. Official BTT segments with licences and IFCN/SIMplifica sources remain below as a separate catalogue.

BTT catalogue

8 official BTT segments described by Visit Madeira

These are short official MTB/BTT segments, often technical or downhill, not full bicycle tours around Madeira. IFCN describes a broader BTT pool, but this version shows only segments with public details: distance, difficulty, time, start/end and source link.

BTT formalities: IFCN lists BTT riding in forest areas as an activity that requires a licence/authorisation. SIMplifica is the place to check and submit the request.

Trail conditions: Check weather, temporary bans, surface condition and the route source before riding. This catalogue does not replace an official IFCN/SIMplifica decision.

BTT data is a separate catalogue from hiking PR trails. Full lines and current rules should be confirmed in IFCN/SIMplifica before riding, especially for technical and downhill routes.

Why this is not just another filter

The hiking PR catalogue answers: “which trail can I hike today?”. The BTT catalogue should answer a different question: “can I legally and safely ride this route by bike?”.

One combined list would be misleading because status, difficulty, equipment, transport and required documents do not mean the same thing for hikers and cyclists.

What a BTT card shows

route name and codestart regiondistance and elevationtype: XC / enduro / downhill / touringcycling difficultylicence or formal requirementsparking and accessofficial source

Data principle

For BTT, it is not useful to guess route lines or difficulty. The full catalogue should include only segments or complete rides where a reliable source, current rules and a clear start point can be shown.

IFCN points to a broader BTT set: 13 independent licensed routes, 8 homologated routes in Porto Moniz and 3 routes in Porto Santo. This catalogue starts with 8 short segments that have fuller Visit Madeira descriptions.

What to improve next

Ride ideas already include neutral parking and access notes. Sensible next additions are better source GPX lines and weather warnings written specifically for cycling.

Named rentals and operators should stay out of the catalogue unless there is a clearly marked advertising or partner section later.
